On October 27, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI and leaders of many of the world’s religions will gather in Assisi, Italy, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s Day of Prayer for World Peace.
Assisi, home of St. Francis, is an ideal location for this gathering. Francis was willing to meet with the Sultan at the time of the Crusades. The “spirit of Assisi” is still one of tolerance and openness within a solidly Catholic identity.
The event has been criticized by several traditional Catholic groups who believe that interreligious dialogue has no place in the true mission and identity of the Roman Catholic Church.
