"A prominent priest of the Los Angeles archdiocese has suggested that a recent conference on exorcism held a few days before a meeting of U.S. bishops was unnecessary and represented a step backwards for the Church.

U.S. bishops sponsored a two-day exorcism training conference on Friday, Nov. 12 and Saturday, Nov. 13, just days before they begin their fall national meeting in Baltimore on Nov. The Conference on the Liturgical and Pastoral Practice of Exorcism was held to teach more priests how to perform the rite, the Catholic News Agency reported, noting that more than 50 bishops and 60 priests were registered for the event.

The training session caught the attention of the New York Times, which published a Nov. 12 story about it under the headline,
